(glock 26 shown in the 226, not the weapon or color im reviewing here)
im preparing to take a trip later this month and as usual i plan to travel with my glock 19. i prefer to travel with the g19 for several different reasons:
- ultimately reliable, the dang thing just wont quit! - perfect size for carry. - im very fast and accurate with it. - if it were to disappear from my checked baggage im only out $450. - 9mm ammo can be found anywhere, no matter where i travel.
while browsing around for a holster for another weapon, i noticed that galco makes an SOB holster for the glock 19, and since i had $75 burning a hole in my pocket i decided to give it a shot.
note: i am not an advocate of SOB carry. i myself have slipped on ice while carrying SOB and felt the sting of a handgun being driven into my spine. ouch! that said however, carry is about compromise. you most always compromise something. some compromise capacity and caliber for concealability. some compromise quality for price. we all compromise ultimate protection (a carbine) for concealability (a handgun). this is no different, being aware of the risks it is worth the benefits for the purposes of this trip (and most likely others). with that said, i placed the order for a galco #SOB226B to fit my glock 19.

what i like: - overall the holster appears to be very well constructed, actually feeling similar to some customs i own. the leather feels much better than the two galco SSS (which ill never buy again due to poor design causing very prominent premature wear points!) i own. im quite impressed with the attention to detail that appears to be put into this off the shelf holster.
- as the pictures above show, it really isnt difficult to conceal this setup. bending over caused printing/showing, but kneeling and squatting did not.
- comfort while walking or standing is excellent. you dont even know its back there.
- retention is adjustable to your liking. i found mine perfect right from the package.
what i dont like: - sitting isnt comfortable. it isnt unbearable, but you know you have a weapon back there.
- draw angle is unnatural for me. im sure this will correct itself in time, but it was one of my first impressions so it is worth noting.
- it takes a little bit longer to draw from SOB than IWB, but this is most likely due to my unfamiliarity with the draw angle.
overall: this is heck of a value overall. although i will not recommend SOB carry to anyone due to moral liability concerns (if you do fall on it and hurt your spine i dont want to know you bought it on my recommendation) i feel that for what i wanted this holster is as beautiful as it is functional. it may not be quite on the level of an alessi/sparks/del fatti/etc. but it really doesnt miss the mark as much as most off-the-shelf holsters do (even other galcos i own), and i had it in my hand within 3 days of ordering it. although i have not compared it to any custom SOB holster, i can compare the overall quality of the build to the overall quality of the build of the customs i own. whereas the cqc/s or the vm2 would rank as perfect "10's" in my opinion, this holster overall would rank an 8.5-9. if like me you know the risks of SOB carry and feel it will meet your needs despite those risks, this is the one to buy.
i sincerely hope that galco eventually makes this holster for the new walther PPS. |

Honestly, you just wanted us to check you out right? You going to the gym or what? First it was Sig40 now it's you.
J/K
Ive been on a lookout for a SOB, I might have to check one of these out. I have one for my issued M9 that I used when I had to fly to Kuwait and still had to carry downtown for buisness in civilian clothing. BTW a M9 sucks to try and CC. |

Thank you for these reports, Nathan. I for one find them very helpful.
I'm still not yet carrying regularly, but plan to. Decision on which weapon and setup is pretty critical to me and it's these reviews that are extremely helpful. |

rngerdv, Your post was the single, hardest laugh I had today.
Nathan, That set up is pretty slick. Seems to hide well. Looking at it and not knowing, I'd guess it probably is more comfortable than IWB for walking or standing. It looks like it would be pretty hard on your lower back while sitting.
Regardless, you've always got your Safepackers. |

I'm firmly on the side that does not like the SOB carry method. Besides discomfort on sitting, it will print if you have to bend over. If you can hide it SOB, you can hide it on your hip. All it takes is a baggy t-shirt, Aloha shirt, one of those “shoot-me-first” tactical vests, or a light jacket.
I’ve known cops who suffered permanent, disabling back injury when they went down, landing on their guns. Not worth the risk, IMO. |

This is a great looking holster and I wanted to like it. I knew if the gun was directly behind the spine it would be painful to sit and I was right. No way to sit down and not be in pain. My plan was to try it on the side and as far away from the center as possible. No good either if you sit at all. The grip of my gun also seemed to hang out a bit more than I expected. Even tightening the belt did not fix this. Even though I really wanted to like this holster, I can not wear it and had mine about one week and let it go. |

I have one for a 1911 that has seen only several days' use, now it rides in the sock drawer. It's a beautifully made holster but a poor fit for me. |

| SOB never really worked for me. Seen quite a few people print because their were squating or bending while SOB carrying. |
Glock 19/FEG HiPower/Keltec P32/NAA .22Mag for me...til I can get my 870 or Marlin 336 of course.

I have this holster and hate it. I did not feel like the gun was secure and constantly found myself reaching back to make sure the gun was: 1)still in the holster and 2)not printing or my shirt was still pulled down over it. I much prefer carrying IWB and have not had anymore of these problems since changing my style of carry. Tuck |

Without regard to the drawbacks stated, that looks like it would be more accessable on a bike. Have you tried it from your's? I have a bike also and it looks like it would fit the bill to carry with. thanks |

| I have a Galco SOB for a government 1911......it is not an every day carry, but it certainly does have it's place for me. It is really good for motorcycles. Way better than IWB for long rides. And also when I'm going to be on my feet for long stretches of time. I never wonder if my gun is where it belongs, and I take some pleasure in that. It really is a special purpose holster, but it's not in the box in the attic. |

I really like the idea of SOB carry (outside of waistband but still easily concealed) if you have any neurological problems that could cause your legs to buckle or fall, the risk of falling backwards on it and injuring your spine is just too high. Great review Nathan even if I am posting a few years later! |

I used to have Galco SOB holsters for every carry piece I owned. Over the last 6 years or so with my back issues I found it difficult to carry SOB. Now that I've had surgery I may be able to try them again.
They definately make some of the best holsters available IMHO. |

Aren't you worried you'll undo any progress made after surgery if you carry SOB and have an accident? |

Right now I am. I have another MRI scheduled for Wednesday, they think I may have reherniated my disc
Once I am fully healed I think it should be good as new.

The original surgery cost us $100 out of pocket. I am assuming if a second operation is needed it will cost @ the same. Not a whole lot of money, but it definately is starting to add up...
