when somebody posts that they have bought a new gun my typical initial response is "congratulations!". after thinking on this though it doesnt seem fitting because its not a great accomplishment to spend money.

...so now im wondering what is the proper word or usage that im looking for?

Kudos for draining your bank account and contributing to the economy!

Usually, my initial thought is "I'm jealous" and "I need to buy myself a new one" which leads to ", I shouldn't spend more money" that eventually turns around to "thanks a lot, now I just spend ANOTHER $xxxxxx that I didn't REALLY need to"

As usually is the case, though, the buyer made some sort of sacrifice to buy the gun. Most of us certainly aren't made of money and most of my gun purchases involved a sacrifice....trading another lesser used gun or safe queen gun...putting off the new pair of work boots for another month..., etc, etc. That's why I usually say congratulations because more often than not the buyer thought very hard about his/her decision, seeked advice and input from this forum, and made some sort of sacrifice for the new gun.

I am ok with Congratulations. I believe, at least in my case, I am not made of money. So, when I save up for a gun I usually do some research and looking/shopping around. This could take a while depending on the deals I run across. Once I make the decision to spend the money I am saying that I have worked [x] amount of hours to make enough to afford something I really want. So when I finally get the new gun I feel like I have accomplished something. Getting a congratulations for something like that I am just fine with it.
Alternatives, I guess, could be like said above: I'm jealous, Very nice, Droooooool... etc...

my sentiment is exactly the same, it just didnt seem proper to use "congratulations" because that usually follows a great accomplishment (like graduation, etc.). hmmmm

I thought that if somebody buys a Glock that it constitutes a graduation of sorts to a real pistol and deserves a Congratulation

Look at it this way...

They didn't "spend" money on a gun...they "traded" cash for it.

So, if you make a wise trade, "Congratulations" is a quite adequate response.

Now, if a person spent $1000 on a Hi-point 9mm, then you would have to come up with a different response.

Nathan, when I have gotten some new guns, if I remember correctly you said, "Nice gun!" - which is fitting and perfect.

Now, I would have to send condolences if they bought a Glock...now if they bought a 1911 that would be extreme gratification for both of us.

I'm kinda partial to "you suck". This more clearly defines how you feel when someone else has a new gun and you don't. yes, I'm kidding....don't shoot.

It's adding a member to the family. People say "Congrats" for getting your wife pregnant (not a huge task or accomplishment for most), so why not for purchasing a new gun.

I don't think its' fair to say it is not an accomplishment.
I still have to cut 15 more yards or get nearly 30 more hours of work before I can get a the Smith&Wesson M&P. I will consider it a accomplishment of a personal goal.
It's not about spending money to me, its' about working towards something and being proud that I EARNED it.
You have to remember what it like when you were a teenager or college student Nathan. Surely you had a point where getting 50 dollars saved up was a task, much less enough to buy a gun. JMO

If you don't think "congrats" fits the bill, how about making up a new term. Happy G-day!

I don't see anything wrong with "Congratulations", your sharing your exuberance/elation with them on their DECISION to spend their money on a weapon, not the weapon itself or it's cash value. IMHO.

Or better yet, just reply to sick the Gunny on'em. :)

When I bought that Delta Elite last week you said "excellent choice Landon." That made me feel good about my decision. My wife and I just had a fight about how much money I spend on my "hobby." Luckily, she can only stay mad for an hour or so. I cut up my credit card in front of her to show her that there will be no more gun buying unless I have prior authorization from her.

Damn, I need to stop hanging out at this forum. It has caused financial and marital strain. At least she still loves me.
