Hello Everyone,

New to the forum, but have a question that I am hoping to get some knowledgable responses on. I have had my CCW permit for about 6 mos. I am travelling from NC to OH on US Air in less than two weeks. Is it a hassle to check a handgun on a flight? I know that Ohio's laws are reciprocal with North Carolina's laws and have looked at their actual laws, is that all I really need to know? I have a TSA approved lock box and think I am ready to go, is there anything I am missing?

its very easy, i fly with my handgun in my checked baggage regularly. CLICK HERE. i usually just put a padlock around the handles on my OEM glock case. i lock up spare magazines (loaded) in the same box. make certain your handgun is not loaded though.

It's very easy. Take your lock box, unload your mags and put your ammo in the boxes they came in. Leave the mags out of the gun. Check in at the counter and tell the agent that you have a firearm to check. They will direct you a TSA inspector who will check your gun in and send it on it's way. When you arrive at your destination the airline will page you to the baggage office, there you will find your box waiting for you. The airlines take very good care of your firearm while it in their hands.
All the above was based on traveling with a 1911.
Check the airlines web site and TSA's for the current regs for each. I always print the TSA regs and put them in my Pelican case in case there are any questions about the regs.

It is easy as Nathan says, one extra thing I do is print off the TSA rules and bring them with me because you always run into some dumbass who doesn't know their own rules. Also check the specific airline site to see if they have any other rules.
If I'm not mistaken, you have to have the ammo separate from the gun though.

You don't have to have the ammo separate from the pistol. Just put it in the box that it came in. You can leave it in the mag, but it has to be totally enclosed, i.e. a pouch, etc. per TSA.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the posts, I appreciate the info., I have read a lot on this and was very curious as to how 'easy' or not it may be. It is reassuring to hear from people who have done this before! Thanks for the posts, maybe I will post my experience as a frist timer doing this when I get back in a couple of weeks!

i would also advise you to right down the name and ID# of any airport employee who handles your bag and write it down in their presence. i believe it discourages theft.

the ammunition cannot be in the gun, but it can be stored in the same box. i actually had to debate this with an ignorant TSA officer in st. george UT. he eventually called a supervisor over who agreed with me.

I'm surprised that someone at our dinky little airport would give you grief. He's probably a CA native.

I had to watch someone board a plane the other day (work related), you should see the freakin paperwork TSA makes a Federal Police Officer fill out to take a loaded gun beyond the security checkpoint...

Okay, now you have got me concerned, I only have one handgun, is theft a big issue with checked firearms, and if it is stolen since it is declared, is the TSA or airline responsible for compensation if it is stolen?

I don't think that theft is a big problem with firearms carried as checked baggage. ATF gets involved with firearm theft and it gets real hot real quick. The airline would be responsible for the theft up to their liablility limits.

Prepare to have a scene made.

I travel extensively for work and once I leave my house I don't know where I am off to. I carry TSA regulations and states laws of states that I frequent in my lockable case.

Recently flying out of LAX (I was a little nervous being I was in CA to begin with) on a US airways flight. As usual I quietly told the lady at the counter I had a legal, licenced, locked and unloaded firearm to declarey. There were 100? people around me, no one heard me tell her this. She then yells at another employee "This gentleman has a firearm can you help me?" Suddenly everyone around me looks at me and backs up (love CA!). They then ask me to show them the firearm to them, AT THE TICKET COUNTER!, I ask if it would be better to do this privately. The said it was fine here, so I open my bag, dug out my case and opened the case in the bag as to not let passengers behind me see it. The agent asked me to pull the case out and place it on the counter. I did, opened it up again, she looks at it with a weird look and asked if it is loaded. I told her no, she gave me the sticker to put on it. Once I put it back in the case, and the case in the bag a handler took the bad by hand out of view.

I was pretty miffed I was asked to hold the gun at the counter, and that it was announced i had a gun. Even more so i could have had it loaded and one in the chamber and all she did was ask me if it was loaded.

I always write down the agent's info when I check a gun, looking back I wish I had talked to her superior about her lax ways of dealing with this.

The point to my long windedness is that even in Kalifornia it isnt to hard to check a gun.
