I was just wandering through some of the names in the "Members" list and noticed a lot of names that were registered quite a while ago that have 0 posts.

I know it might take some time, but I was wondering if someone might be able to delete some of those and allow new members to use those names.

Just a thought.

Edit: I want to emphasize my initial idea of deleting those names with 0 posts and add that if they had registered over 1 year ago. If someone has posted even a single post, I'd just leave them on the forum.

I've thought of that myself. It would be helpful to get any of them that aren't active any more. I guess active would have to be defined, but if they haven't posted within the last 90 days, I would consider their account to be delinquent.

I agree that there should be a process to determine members who are not active however there may be some members who are deployed or ill and for whatever reason are unable to post. It would be a shame to delete an individuals account and then have them return to the forum and find it gone and their name "taken" by another. JMTCW

Actually, it would be better to do it by their "last visited" date if it's going to happen at all. There are a lot of members who are signed up that only visit and read and don't post as much or at all.

I agree with Ted, I visit here daily to gain information but I rarely post. I don't have my CCW yet so I can't offer first hand experience myself. I would like to be allowed to stick around as I am going to be able to get my CCW within the next year.

Some people listen more than talk. Should we be penalized for that? Besides, I don't think too many would want to use my username. ;-)

I'm not sure how it works, but if we delete the user would all of the old posts disappear? If it didn't that could lead to some problems down the road when someone thought a post by the old name was a post by the new name!

yeah i was bored one day and actually counted the number of peole who had registered names and 0 posts and it was somewhere in the 1500 range or something crazy like that. I wrote it down with the intent of posting a topic on it but thought better of it since it's none of my business. But just so you know, I actually counted them all.

Nathan would know for sure, but as far as I can tell from this forum software and the Access database he's running, I don't think there's any ill effect on the site performance from having users with 0 posts sitting around. If they aren't posting, they aren't adding to the DB crunching and maintenance, hehe.

Nathan can change registered forum names. I say if you wanted a name that was taken and used a different one to register, and see it unused by someone that registered a year ago and has never posted, just ask for the name. The account can be deleted and your name changed.
If the person shows up later they can easily re-register in seconds and change a character or add a number or whatever.

Either way it beats having someone make judgement calls on 1500 users and spend all that time.

With that said, if Nathan/mods preferred to just clean up the unused accounts, I'd happily volunteer for it, I used to take care of stuff like that on a large gaming site I had admin/mod privs on.

I believe the intent is to delete those that don't even log in at all, not people who just do not contribute to the discussion.

I would think there are a lot of folks that want to get great info but aren't interested in sharing their views.

Wow, even more than I thought. This is my point and my thought is that those are 1500+ names that others could be using instead of those names just sitting unused and unusable.

I don't see that creating a unique name or tag would be that hard to do. If it is already in use, then its not that unique.
