I recently tested Hornady's 180 grain .40 S&W to a Speer Gold Dot 147 grain 9mm and it has shown me that I need to shoot the rest of my Hornadys at the range and just buy from Double Tap even more.
All I did was use regular milk jugs filled with water. The Speer went through three and rested in the 4th. The Hornady went through three and rested in the fourth also, but due to its lack of expansion and penetration I don't think I will ever buy another pistol round from Hornady again. Both shots were taken from 10 yards.
Here are the two comparison pics I have. Speer is on left and Hornady at right.

| Although water usually gets decent expansion results, it's hard to use it as a reliable source for "flesh" comparisons. Even saying that, performance could go either way in flesh, better or worse. Hard to say |

I know this, but if they won't expand well in a controlled environment then how the hell am I going to trust them in an uncontrolled one? |

| Good visual though. Looks like both bullets retained all or most of their original mass. |

I love the way that Gold Dots expand. My next post on ammo will be .45 ACP Gold Dots and 180 grain 10mm Double Tap. I don't know if I'll have enough milk jugs for the 10mm. |

Thanks....I have both and I sure know what is going to be used as range ammo now...I carry WWB 147gr jhp's in my g19 per Nathans suggestions and my pf9 gets the 147 gr gold dots since it feeds them reliably. Of course this is only until I can get my hands on some HST's
I would really like to see that same kind of test with the WWB |

| If I can find some WWB 147 grain I will pick them up and post a comparison for you. Problem is, that's the only thing Walmart never has around here. You can find everything else though. |

| hornady makes quality ammunition, they just load it conservatively typically. the 230 grain hornady is on track with everybody else (950 fps) but the hornady 9mm and .40 are both slow in comparison to other loads. |

| Thanks for the info Landon. I usually try to buy from companinies who's speciality is ammo, federal, speer, hornandy. I had been trying some hornandy but I'll see how the rest of mine hold up before I buy any more. I don't want "conservative" ammo when I need it. |

Sir, Sunday I will be doing some more expansion tests and will post the updates here when I get home and snap the pics. I was able to get my hands on 4 boxes of the WWB 147 grain personal protection rounds today. They were actually sitting in the case for almost a week the guy told me. |

id be interested as well, Landon. Ive snagged quite a bit of the WWB PP in 147gr 9mm and 230gr 45acp lately.
my reasoning for buying so much of it is that its only marginally more $$ than WWB FMJ and pretty much the same price as other brands FMJ... and that as SHTF ammo it would likely serve at least marginally better than FMJ.
i dont plan to use it as EDC ammo as i have other readily available (but more expensive) that i trust a bit more.
let us know what you find man, im keen to hear... |

I did some a while back with 147gr 9mm WWB hp's in some home made ballistics gel for a nursing school project. I'll see if I can't find which laptop I have the pictures on. I know they're on this website somewhere, too. |

Thanks for the post Landon. I continued my search today for some quality 38spl jhp and the store I went to had Hornady CDs and Speer GDs. I've seen the name Hornady alot, but they weren't as heavy as the Speer Gold Dots and the tips on the Gold Dots looked like they would expand very nicely. This post also came to mind when I was comparing the two. THANKS LANDON |
