Alright well im not sure if this is the right spot to put this but Ill try it.
Now I know that this I shouldnt use this as legal advice im just looking for some experienced people or LEOs that might have some insight...

A few friends of mine would like to go shooting at a range near campus and I want bring one of my .22 rifles from home. Problem is .. I live on campus... obviously no weapons allowed. Unfortunately my house is not anywhere near campus so I would like to find a way to keep the rifle locked and secure on campus so that way I could bring it with me to the range. Ive read somewhere... and I am not positive that this is correct but ... If a weapon is broken down that it isnt considered a weapon but is actually just considered mechanical parts of some sort. Is there anyway that I i remove the bolt from the receiver or disassemble it would I be able to do this and Whether or not it is legal.

Thanks

You are getting into a real " gray zone " on this one Ryan, call an attorney that deals with weapons related law. We could give you advice but it may not be correct and I do not want to see you get kicked out of school or worse get arrested AND booted from school.

Make some calls, there should be an attorney in your area that can answer your question.

Why not just secure it in your trunk and park slightly off campus...

" I would like to find a way to keep the rifle locked and secure on campus so that way I could bring it with me to the range."

You are young yet, but NO weapons on campus means exactly that. This is not gray. It is bold and black. If you get caught, you will not only get kicked out of school, you could lose your right to carry a weapon....forever. Is it really worth the convenience?? Part of becoming a mature adult is not taking the easy way out. Whether or not YOU think that weapon is "secure" it is still ON CAMPUS. If you get caught, they arent going to care how tightly it was locked up.

In this age of campus shooters, those rules are there for a reason. I know it is a big "IF" and the probability is you might not get caught.

Breaking the weapon down and it being considered mechanical parts relates to shipping it, where it would have to be untaped, unboxed and put back together. It doesnt refer to you being able to quickly assemble it in a matter of seconds or a minute.

What you are considering is breaking the law. We dont condone that here. Period.

alright thank you. I was just checking and I cant just park off campus. I left my car home for my mom because they are going through rough financial times and my dad also just had open heart surgery.
I do not want ot break the law and I do know that is not condoned here. I would never condone that. I was just wondering if there was a way that would be legal. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Sorry about your problems.
I am pretty sure that IF all parts are available to assemble it, it is considered a weapon.
(It would be possible for someone to assemble and use it and I am sure this is how the school would view it.)
Is their anyone near campus (that you really trust) that could hold the gun for you?

I BELIEVE SOME CAMPUSES ALLOW VISITORS TO LEAVE THEIR PISTOL AT THE SECURITY OFFICE FOR THE DAY/WEEKEND.
YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK THE SCHOOL POLICIES OR ASK THE SECURITY OFFICE YOU CAN KEEP YOUR GUN LOCKED UP THEIR.

I will check into the security office part.
I have a few friends that live together off campus and while I trust them with it... they have alot of parties with alot of drinking going on and i could not in good concious leave a weapon there.

I wont even start with the guns and a "party" house at a college campus.....One other option might be if there is a gun shop near by, see if the owner will lease you some storage space for a bit.

Would it be possible to leave it there with them but in a locked case that only you have the key for, with no ammunition? Just a thought, otherwise I would also suggest checking with Campus Police/Security to see if it can be stored at their facility.

It depends on your state if it is legal to carry on a college campus. Some states forbid this, others don't. For instance, I live in a state in which there are no laws prohibiting college campus carry, but the individual colleges can prohibit this in their codes of conduct. In this situation, if you were to be caught carrying on campus, you wouldn't have broken any laws but you would still have to deal with the college's system of justice - in other words you'd probably be expelled.

That being said, be advised that neither I nor CCF advocate illegal activity. Be sure to obey all federal, state, and local laws. When in doubt, contact a licensed attorney in your area who is familliar with the topics in question.
