So no carry on campus (which sucks, go Utah) but you can normally have a gun in your car, so can you have your gun locked up in your car while on campus?

Anybody got the rules on that, because I can't find that one on the gun law sites?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm no lawyer , but I did find this on page 2 of the MS handgunlaws.us site.

97-37-17 Allows firearms in vehicles if they stay within the vehicle.
(g) Any weapon which is in a motor vehicle under the control of a parent, guardian or custodian, as defined
in Section 43-21-105, which is used to bring or pick up a student at a school building, school property or school function.

That would appear to exempt school parking lots. I would suggest you do some additional checking on your, but at least you have a specific section of the law to reference.

Thanks for the response.

Although it makes it sound like you must remain in the car and I need to keep it locked up in the car. Handgunlaws.us was down just now, I'll check again later.
Thanks again.

I'm no attorney, either, but my interpretation of what I have read indicates that having a firearm in your vehicle is essentially allowed anywhere. Your vehicle is generally considered an extension of your home.

Mississippi Law Sec. 97-37-1 (2) states "It shall not be a violation of this section for any person over the age of eighteen (18) to carry a firearm or deadly weapon concealed in whole or in part within the confines of his own home or his place of business, or any real property associated with his home or business or within any motor vehicle".

The code mentions a possible exception for the Natchez Trace (which I believe is a national park); however, I suspect this exception no longer applies with the new federal law that applies state law to those areas of national parks that are within the individual state.

Again, I am no attorney. This is just the way I read and interpret the situation.

I live in MS. I went to Hinds and am now at state. I had a good cop friend at Hinds and from him and reading all that I could find I found out that as long as you are not a student you can legally have a weapon in your vehicle.

There are times, albeit rarely, when I can't believe it either.

But after all it is home and I still love it.

Wife came here from LA to find a husband, been here almost 30 years. Says she'll die here. Hey, when the cop at the road block ask if you have anything in your vehicle and you tell him a pistol, he just waves you through. At most he might ask what make and model if he's a gun guy. Been asked for my wildlife permit but never my carry.

I don't really see what difference it should make whether or not you are a student. It is either legal or it isn't... and from what I can tell, if it's in your car, it should be legal according to the quoted statute above.

Im not sure if you will go to jail or not if it is found in your vehicle but if your a student you will at least get kicked out of the college.
