 ConcealedCarryForum.com Reviews Crossbreed Supertuck
I have been seeking a temporary use holster to carry my Sig 229R until my VM2 arrives. Factoring in cost (about $80 delivered), availability (turn-around 3-4 weeks), and input from other owners I decided to try the Crossbreed Supertuck shown above. I placed my order on 10 May, 2010 and the holster arrived on 4 June, 2010.

Despite coming into this order with a prejudice against shoving kydex in my pants, my initial impression was positive overall. After owning every type and style of holster made I have long ago concluded that in IWB holsters, forward and rear belt loops are absolutely required to prevent the holster from rolling up (even enough to come out of your pants!) when you sit. I own some very expensive IWB holsters that roll when I sit (CLICK HERE for an example) because they lack proper forward and rear lateral support.
What I Like:

Gun Fit: The kydex molding is a perfect fit for my Sig. "Fits like a glove" isnt even an accurate enough description; it's like the gun and holster are two pieces of a very precise puzzle. The fit is incredible, while allowing enough room in the sight channel, etc. to make reholstering effortless despite less than perfect alignment. I'm very impressed with the quality of the kydex mold on this holster.
Lateral Support: Standing, running, crawling, sitting, and even laying down (I slept in this holster last night to test) the holster never rolled at all. The forward and rear belt loops keep the holster right where it belongs. Carry is supposed to be comforting, not comfortable...and nothing is as uncomfortable as a weapon that shifts around due to inadequate lateral support. This will certainly not be an issue with this holster.
Overall Comfort: The Sig 229 is painfully thick and makes IWB carry difficult under the best circumstances. Despite this thickness (of the Sig), the Crossbreed isnt unbearable to wear.
Price/availability: The Crossbreed is priced fair and turn-around time is reasonable.
What I Don't Like:

Drawing: Drawing from this holster is horribly slow (in comparison to other holsters) and can even be painful if you try a quick draw. The kydex molding near the top rearward rivet comes up too high blocking your middle finger from attaining a positive grip. The impact of my middle finger into this corner of the mold actually hurts during a fast draw. In addition, the leather backing further hinders your middle finger from attaining a positive grip, and the leather backing near the top and along the backside of the grip prevent you from attaining a positive grip on the weapon. I'm not exactly sure what the "combat cut" option is on this holster (the manufacturers website does a poor job explaining the differences and lacks any pictures to show you the differences) and perhaps this "combat cut" would fix the leather backing blocking issue. I cannot say for certain because the manufacturer does such a poor job explaining it on their website. I don't know what if anything could fix the issue of the middle finger hitting the corner of the kydex mold. I may try trimming it down myself but I don't want to run the risk of damaging/ruining the holster. Limiting my review to the holster as delievered all I can say for certain is that at least in the drawstroke this holster is as big a failure as a square wheel.

Leather Backing: The leather backing is not only huge but its also very rough against the skin causing a sweaty rawhide effect. In all fairness I'm a free-baller and really do not like wearing boxers or briefs and if you do this may not be an issue for you. Since this is my review however, I can only give you my assessment of how the holster serves my needs. As I move around, the huge rough leather backing can be rather abrasive with the only saving grace being the lubrication provided by the sweat caused by the huge contact patch. The steel rivets and screw backs were surprisingly a non-issue. In fact, I didn't feel them at all.

Belt Clip Finish: I look at the belt clips and wonder "WTF is this finish?". Is it a paint? Is it a chemical treatment? Is it corroded? Whatever it is, the clips just look dirty or corroded. This might be just fine with jeans, but you pretty-boys who dress up all sweet might have an issue with the finish on the clips. Its a minor detail, but looking at the poor finish on the clips certainly lessens the perceived quality of the holster.
Minor Points: I clearly noted that I needed the holster to be delivered by 24 May, 2010 so that I could use it on my recent trip. My request was printed on my receipt so I'm certain that they got it. I realize this was short notice and I understand they obviously could not work my order in soon enough, but I do feel that they could have at least told me that they could not meet my requested deadline somewhere in one of the three emails they sent me thanking me for my order and sending me my electronic receipt. In addition, they charged $8.95 for shipping/handling but the postage was actually $3.11. A minor point certainly, but just something I noticed.
How Does It Really Compare?

Quality Supertuck VM2
Comfort Supertuck VM2
Draw Ergonomics Supertuck VM2
Durability: Supertuck VM2
Retention: Supertuck VM2
Price: Supertuck VM2
Availability: Supertuck VM2
Resell Value: Supertuck VM2
Conclusion:
Although there are several things I do not like about the Crossbreed, my only real complaint is the god-awful draw stroke that is hindered by the awful ergonomics of the holster which prevent a fast and positive grip on the weapon. It's nothing that I cannot live with and I am certain to use this holster daily until my VM2 arrives. If I can ever figure out exactly what the combat cut option is I may return my holster to the manufacturer for the upgrade after which I will update my review.

| The combat cut nothing you really should pay for. Its cutting away some of the leather backing so that you can get a better grip on the weapon. (which seemed to be the main draw back for you) I personally like the the combat cut, but I think you can save yourself the $10 and cut it yourself for the same effect. Maybe someone could post pics of the combat cut as the only camera I have is on my phone. Great review by the way. |

| Looks like nolt cut on the kydex as well which if you order the combat cut they will not do. That is why I think cutting it yourself could be the better choice for some. |

| Nate, a very sharp pair of tin snips will trim the Kydex really quick, followed by a light round over with a dremel....do not get the kydex hot. |

Nate,
Try out a Minotaur M-Tac. I think they pretty nicely address the issues you did not like with the supertuck. -Soft leather backing is designed to be comfortable against bare skin -Combat cut is standard -Kydex does not interfere with draw at all
To me it seems like Minotaur must have owned a few supertucks, looked at what they did not like & started making holsters that were VERY similar but did not have the shortcomings.
ps: ordered the shell for my M&P & 2 sets of extra hardware may 19, arrived june 5. |

Nathan, as you know I am a HUGE lover of the Crossbreed Supertuck but as you mentioned the draw from a factory ST is hindered a bit and that corner of Kydex will get your middle finger almost every time you try to "quick-draw". I did my own combat cut on my Supertuck and that included trimming down that corner like Nolt did and using a dremel and some fine sand paper to smooth it out. It works GREAT, its comfy and its easy to draw from now, I do not have alot of experience with a VM2 so I can not really comment but I guess in the end you really do get what you pay for and the quality of the VM2 should be that much higher than the Supertuck due to the cost being nearly triple the cost of the Supertuck.
Great review, im a little disturbed that a big gun lover like yourself said he is a "free-baller" instead of saying you are "running commando" lol |

Triple? The VM2 is $110 straight from MS. The ST is $80. That makes it closer to a third higher, but the quality is at least triple. I can't stand the ST, but Nate has done a fair review on it. |

A VM2 from Top Gun is $146.
Even if you order directly from Milt Sparks, the 6 month wait time will ultimately cost you more than $110.
Look up "lost opportunity cost" of your money. That is if they charge you ahead of time. If they charge when your order ships then I guess the pain is just the wait.
Also a Mini Tuck is $67, so the VM2 is about 2.25 times the price. |

cutting the leather and the kydex is pretty easy. take a pencil and just draw a rough line where you think you may want to cut and its pretty easy to tell where you want to cut. you can cut with scissors or a utility knife. i lightly used a sanding wheel to smooth out the edges of the leather after i made the cut.
ive heard people say that CB trimmed the kydex when they shipped their holster back but they dont always. maybe you have to ask.
agreed with bravo: its really easy to cut this and i personally dont see any reason why someone (especially someone like Nathan that works with tools etc) couldnt/shouldnt just do it themselves.
for the kydex cut i just used the little cutting bit on the dremel that looks sort of like a drill bit. cuts thru the kydex like butter. i think i may have lightly sanded it with the sanding wheel as well.
nice review Nathan i agree on all points fwiw.
it was after i got my first vm2 clone that i decided the purchase on the supertuck sucked. after i did the combat cut it made a WORLD of difference and it doesnt sacrifice very much comfort IF ANY.
i updated my thread with another pic or two. after i posted the thread i went back and cut a little bit more leather so that the mag release isnt contacting leather at all. despite never having any problems with inadvertent mag release i still feel this is important in principle.

| I know a lot of folks here think that Kholster ripped off the design from supertuck (who ripped off the holster called the Answer, but for some reason "we" are ok with that). My kholster has a couple of differences from the supertuck....first the leather is turned around....smooth side to the skin which makes it a lot more comfortable when it is next to the skin. Second, my Kholster has kydex clips which I dont know if they are available anymore. Third, my kholster was only 39 bucks and is extremely comfortable. Fourth, My kholster has 10 adjustment holes for each clip allowing you to adjust it about anyway you want. The Kholster now comes basically as a full circle of leather but mine did not and I enhanced the combat cut to my liking. I was thinking about buying a new one and leaving the full circle of leather and canting it for SOB carry since the leather would spread any pressure or "hit" over a wider area and maybe reduce the possibility of injury if I take a spill on my bike. |

They don't charge you until your order ships unless you pay in advance with a check or MO. A Minituck doesn't compare to the VM2 style holster anyway as they are apples and oranges in their own respects. My Little Bear holster for my M&P 45c was $85 and is damn near the quality level of a VM2.
As mentioned previously, the draw on the Crossbreed is disgusting. The ST I had for my 45c would let the gun move around so much that I was afraid to lean back in a recliner for fear of it falling out.
Anyway, we will never see eye to eye on this subject... so have a nice day Phil. |

oh sorry, I have seen several listed locally for 200 bucks, must be because they order them and wait it out to make a 60 buck profit. I have a guy trying to sell me one for 200 with a dual mag holster and a VM2 in black, guess he is trying to me over but then again I dont know what their mag holsters sell for.

The D4C is $60 directly from Milt Sparks. I ordered it and the VM2 for my EMP 40. There is a ton of ass s that will order multiple VM2s (all for different guns of course, since they won't let you order more than one for the same gun) and they'll turn right around and sell it as soon as they get it for a $50-100 profit. It's quite disgusting, and all it really does is tie up Tony and crew while they could've been making holsters for the people that actually wanted them. |

Nathan if you ever buy another supertuck i think would recommend the horsehide for you. yeah yeah as youve heard it does hold up better with sweat etc but mainly for you i think the horsehide in general is going to be a lot less rough on the backside.
there is some variability... my supertuck for my PPS is ALMOST as rough as the cowhide ones, but my other three horsehide supertucks are much smoother on the back.
if you look at the reverse pic on my combat cut thread you can kinda see how its smoother. |

Just checked MS website. They must have updated their policy in the last 2 months. Each order is limited to 2 holsters and only if they are for different guns. Otherwise 1 per order. |
