Here's my initial report on the new Ruger SR40. Please bear with me as I'm no gun reviewing expert by any means.

This is the 40 version of the SR9. It is almost an exact copy of the SR9 with just a larger barrel. The only differences being that they added about 1/16 inch width to the slide to give it some more mass. Otherwise is has the same features that I really liked about the SR9 such as adjustable three dot sights, the visual loaded chamber indicator and the manual safety. I shot the SR9 about a month ago, and had remarked to myself that if they made this gun in a 40 I would buy it right away. I guess the folks at Ruger must have heard me since two weeks later I find out it's being released. I picked mine up for $392 plus shipping from Impact Guns (online). My local shop had it for $480 plus tax.

This gun fits my hand well and I find the ergonomics of it to be natural for me. The mag release is exactly where I need it and the mag slides out quick and easy, I hope that doesn't change over time. I'm carrying this in a Crossbreed Supertuck and I find that although it's not a "compact" gun it conceals very easily even under a t-shirt. The only time I'm aware of it printing is if I'm bent over at the waist picking something up off the ground. Otherwise I've been wearing it around the house and my wife has not noticed it yet.

I took it out to the range yesterday and put 100 rounds of the Winchester white box 165 grain fmj through it as well as 10 rounds of the Hornady Critical Defense 165 grain which is what I'm currently carrying in it. I shot from 7 yards as well as 10 yards. Everything fed very smoothly, there were no FTF's or any issues like that. I prefer the three dot sight as it allows me to acquire a target quickly compared to other sight styles. For the most part all my groupings were as tight as usual (about 7 inch diameter at 30 ft), as though I'd been shooting with this gun for a long time. The only exception was a couple strays, probably about 5 inches outside my group (but still on the paper) when I was attempting a quick succession or my lame excuse for a double tap. I fired the gun with a dominant two hand grip and a single hand grip. I have not yet fired it with my off-hand.

The gun came from the factory in a hard case with two 15 round mags, a loader and a lock.

Here's a couple pics, one from the web and two of mine:

I had a P95. Absolute reliability. Simple design that never collected grit. Bomb proof. The problem for me was it was built like a tank, and carried like a tank. It looks like the SR series solved the bulk issues of the P series.

Amazing price, and I think Ruger has a solid reputation for reliability. At least my experience has been positive.

Thanks for the review.

For looks this gun has it all over the big three in polymer; glock, M&P and XD. I've seriously considered each and have come close to purchasing one of the three at different times. The ugly factor has always killed the deal.

For function I think the Ruger is going to be a winner. I read a review somewhere that mentioned the recoil had been tamed in comparison to other 40's. I'm done buying guns for this year but will pick one up next spring. It looks like the carry gun I've been waiting for.

I have no experience with the SR9 or 40 but they look like nice weapons. I have looked at them a little in gun cases and they seem to be well made and look as if the grip would be comfortable. If I had more money to play around with, I'd definitely would like to have one around. For now, my polymer guns will be XDs as I have experience with them and shoot them well. Why mess with what works, I suppose.

Anyways, nice looking piece and good report!

I bought a new SR40 this afternoon. If it shoots as well as it looks and feels it just might be a keeper. I plan to range test it this weekend.

I've put another 260 rounds through it and I'm still very happy with it. No issues whatsoever as far as firing goes. And for what it's worth, I've had several comments of appreciation from others at the range.

Bear, I'm looking forward to your opinion!

I developed a gum infection over the weekend and had to have a root canal this morning. I didn't get a chance to take it out but I did consider using the new pistol to shoot out my sore tooth.

I'll try again in a couple of days.

The trigger on my SR9 is very smooth, and from all of the video's I've watched and the ones I've played with in person (dry firing, not actually shooting) they seem to feel the same...light and smooth.

PS. I love my Super Tuck as well!

I picked up the SR40 C about 6 months ago. Man is it awesome. I got it with a 10 rd clip for carrying and a full size 17 rd clip with a grip adaptor to make it like a full sized SR40. So far I have put a few 100 rounds through it, and being somewhat of a novice, I love how easy it is to handle. I am no dead eye, but I have a great confidence in putting the bullets where I need to. I have had no malfunctions that I can attribute to the gun....... I purchased a fobus hip holster and carry it the majority of the time. With the compact clip in it is light enough that it doesn't bother me, yet heavy enough to let me know I am secure because it is there. There is a little kick to it. I am 5'10 160 and can feel it but it is defintely controlable. A friend of mine bought the SR9 and that shoots smooth as glass! I don't feel like I have made a mistake, but if i had it to do all over again, I would probably choose the SR9 C because of how smooth it shot and some cheaper ammo is never a bad thing. That being said, I am still extremely happy with what I have. These are just the opinions of an average guy and his gun, hope it helps.
