I am kind of killing two birds with one stone here. I am finding myself with two dilemmas needing reconciling:

1) I have no firearms

2) It's hilly as hell here and many places don't have the smoothest of terrain. With my current mobility status, this can be havoc.

There's an activity popular over here called "Nordic Walking". Basically, people walk around wherever they go with two ski pole looking things making cross-country skiing motions. I guess it's supposed to be healthy for you. I think it just makes you look like a dork.

In this dorkiness I find a solution to both of my issues. I went and bought a set of these fiberglass poles. I really only need one. I use it as sort of a walking stick/cane in my right hand. It is roughly 4 feet long or so, and pretty easy to swing (it's also strapped to my hand so I can't accidentally drop it). Aside from better stability, I now have a weapon! It's lightweight, but much like swinging an old car antenna at someone, it hurts like a motherer and it's better than nothing. It also has a metal "tooth" on the tip of it for digging into soft or icy terrain... or a human chest or eye.

Not ideal, but better than nothing. Much easier to carry around, and a bit more practical than the old weighted cane I used to use. Hopefully I won't need it for the manufacturer's unintended use.

That's why I'm glad you're in Germany and not me, although, you could send me some good beer, LOL.

Have you looked into staff fighting at all. I've looked into it a bit because is won't be long before I'm walking with the support of a cane. I want that option when I do.

I have not, but that is an interesting idea. I've never really even thought of it. Something to look into, though. There's about 15 different "martial arts" classes offered all the time on base and locally in K-Town. I'll definitely look into it. I've been talking with my wife about all of us taking some sort of self defense/martial arts instruction. My oldest wants to, and my youngest is about the age where it would be good for her to start. Thanks for the suggestion.

HK, as Ted said, I'm in Europe. I can't even carry a blade of any sort here on my person!

I use a stout hickory cane almost 1 1/4". It's much like a mini "Louisville Slugger". You can use it anywhere, even on an airplane. Exellent non-lethal protection.

Sounds like being in Chicago with good beer.

It's all about shot placement.
