Okay, so I initially started out with an IWB for my S&W .38 spl.

Got home, messed with it a little bit, tried it on my belt everywhere between in front of my hip, to almost being on my spine, and decided to return it the next day, because I HATED it.

Got a Galco SOB instead- it was 100x easier for me to conceal, but now I'm having issues of it sliding around when I draw, even though I stick a belt loop in between both sides where it attaches. I know the dangers of SOB carry, so I don't want to talk about that..but I'm also getting really fed up with this holster too, and am thinking of returning it as well, as soon as I can find the box.

Anyone have any suggestions of anything else I could try? I'm almost to the point of wanting to carry my husbands Glock 19, especially since there seem to be so many more holster choices for it, not to mention it holds 3x the rounds that my baby does! I'm 5'5" and 150ish, and would prefer something IWB, especially since I'm constantly toting a toddler around who likes to grab at anything he can!

It would help if we knew what holster/s you are trying as in maker and model. A S&W .38 spl could be several different frames and many barrel lengths.Let us know exactly what it is that you are trying to carry.

A high quality holster from any manufacturer is not a cheap proposition. I use Milt Sparks VM2 and Kramer #3 IWB for most of my herd.A sturdy belt is also another requirement. If you can fold it in half vertically it is not up to the job of supporting and distributing the firearms weight on your body.

Concealed carry is another element of life that needs to be dressed around as it is not always comfortable but should always be comforting. However, a high quality holster almost always IS comfortable and is also quite secure.

I have NEVER like SOB holsters..same with ankle holsters. I am also not a big fan of appendix carry either there are however others that use them and like those modes of carry.
You would do well to read the concealed guide on this forum which would be a great help to you.

There are many quality products out there........with some more information we can help you out.

I like IWB hybride holsters like the Galco King Tuck and the Crossbreed. I have also found the Clevelands Holster are pretty good at a good price. Custom made for your gun.

It's a S&W model 642 if that helps.

I guess I should also get another belt as well, I didn't think about it not really being sturdy enough. I've been wearing one that I got a good 7-8 years ago, that's so broken in that it can EASILY be folded in half vertically.

What is the holster that was just posted?

I stopped at our local tactical store, as they were the only ones who sell anything that fits my gun around here, so I'm not too surprised that out of the two choices that they had that neither of them worked.

I also use a J frame S&W model 36 which is almost identical to your 642. Most of the time I carry it in my front pocket in a Kramer pocket holster. Could be an option for you as well.....

If you still like IWB carry (which is still my favorite) there are many great well made high quality holsters on the market for you that are very comfortable, fit your revolver like a glove, have great retention and will last for many many years.

It looks like the holster pictured in medic68's post is a Milt Sparks VM-2 or a clone of it. One of the most copied holster designs on the market today for good reason....they work. Couple it with a sturdy belt and you are good to go forever.

You could also do a search on eBay for J frame IWB holster......you will get a LOT of options there. I would also do some research on companies like Milt Sparks, Kramer, DeSantis, Gould Goodrich, Don Hume, Bianchi, to name a few.

Your 642 is a GREAT choice for CC! With a little help from fellow members you will find a very comfortable and comforting holster for you to use daily.

So many try to use cheap, poorly made and poorly designed cordura nylon holsters with a flimsy belt and it is no wonder that they end up being very unhappy.

Certainly medic68 will log in and let us know what holster he is showing....this is an example of great design, great workmanship, great material etc. You will NOT regret owning a holster like his ever.

After much debate with myself, I decided to carry my husbands Glock 19. He's deploying pretty soon, and it's not like he's going to need it! I'm going to keep my .38 as a fun gun.

After trying out over 10 different holsters for the 19, I settled on a Blackhawk Check-Six. It's super comfy, and I'm not having any problems like I did with the Galco for my gun...not to mention that it hugs me more, and the ass end doesn't stick out like the .38 did. This momma is happy!

Glad you are happy ...The Blackhawk Check-six is a quality holster in ALL regards and will serve you very well for many years. Couple it with a good sturdy belt and you are good to go. That is what a quality set up is all about.

Thank you and your husband for your service it is deeply appreciated!

FWIW, I'm much more comfortable IWB'ing my Glock than my Smith wheelie, but women are built differently (woo hoo!).

Thank YOU. It always makes my day go a little better when I see that there are other people who think that the service members are in it alone, and that they aren't leaving behind someone who isn't also making a sacrifice! Sure, it's stupid, but I'm tired of hearing "well you married him, so you knew what you were getting into...."

I tried to IWB it before I got this Blackhawk, and HATED it. Thanks, though! I've got way too much weight to lose, so it kinda got sucked into my lovehandles. Very unfortunate..I thought I would never see my gun again. I'm trying it out with one of my husbands rigger belts at the moment, and it seems to be working alright.

kerri, this may or may not help. but andrew from andrews custom leather has a lightweight snubbie shoulder holster. its only a half shoulder holster. its meant as a back up rig. one side has the holster, all hand stitched by him, and the other side is just a nylon band that goes around your other arm, so its kind of one sided. you would have to be wearing some kind of over garment, but it could just be a shirt. his products are a little expensive, but if it works and lasts a lifetime, well it could be worth the price. but im a guy, so take my advice with a boulder of salt.
stay safe

I have become increasingly alarmed at what I see, and have been spending weekend building survival skills, and working on my emergency preps and such. I hope you are too.

Kerri,

just curious about how you resolved this issue....

Hope you don't mind my chiming in. I'm a firearms trainer who makes holsters and does CCW consulting. I do a lot of work with women.

Unfortunately, your experience with the IWB is common for women. Holster comfort is extremely individual, and while IWB is perhaps the best all-around option, many find they are not comfortable -- and that often includes women, because the waistbands of women's slacks are typically higher than those of men. And even a lot of men need to choose their pants specifically for IWB wear. And they're usually NOT the height of fashion.

There's a company called Vertx that makes a pair of slacks designed for women who CCW that looks much better than most..

http://www.wearvertx.com/VertxWomensPant.aspx

I've used their counterpart for men, worn them to business meetings, etc. And they're very well made.

They might make a difference in comfort, but they might not. I've made IWBs for small revolvers, but the cylinder tends to make them less comfortable than IWBs for flatter guns.

Who makes the SOB you tried? Typically, when folks complain about a holster sliding around, the problem is NOT the holster, it's the belt. A good gunbelt is critical for proper holster function. Standard belts are not stiff enough to properly support most holstered guns. So folks have to over-tighten them to get the holster to pull-in to the body and grip the holster slots properly. If the belt fits the slots or loops on the holster, it won't slide around.

My wife uses a Galco Summer Comfort IWB holster with a Galco gun belt - the benefit of this is this IWB holster rides higher on the hip thus does not cant the grip inwards to the mid-section area.

She carries a Sig P239 - in some aspects much larger [at least longer than a 642] and is very comfortable getting into the car, driving, overall carry etc.

Deep IWB is not generally applicable to the women's shape. The higher on the hip, the less chance of the gun mussle sticking outward and also digging into the waist.

At least another data point to consider since you have and are comfortable with the operational aspects of the 642 - it's a great CCW choice.
