I am about to purchase my first CCW. I have narrowed it down to a Glock 19 or a XDm compact.
I am 5'6" 160lbs. The grip on the glock, even the gen4 is too big. The grip on the springfield with the small backstrap is perfect. I like the glock trigger but hate the springfield's trigger.
I've done some research. I can get a grip reduction on the glock or a trigger job on the XDm. The total cost ends up in the same ballpark.
Opinions? |

| Both guns being equal, with the extra work that needs to be done to each, I would recommend the Glock simply because of all of the aftermarket support and accessories available. The choice is obviously yours and ultimately it boils down to your personal preference, though you might have an easier time sellong the XD with a trigger job than a custom fit glock.....good luck. |

Can't beat a Glock 19 for carry IMO.
Sierra makes a good point though, giving an XDm a trigger job increases the value of the gun, but a custom grip reduction of a glock may likely decrease it's value. But, if it were me, I'd be buying a glock. |

I got the G19, generation 3....just because it was cheaper. No complaints. Classic piece, arguably the most reliable automatic, and uses the most plentiful NATO ammo (for SHTF scenerios.)
Oh, and for a little bit more, get a .40S&W barrel and a few .40 mags, incase you want to try this larger bullet. I like the .40 I have to admit....bit more pop in your puncher.  |

| Hey Nathan, that is an interesting idea. Can you find it cheap enough to offset the barrel swap and new mags? Or in my case, just the barrel swap, as I love the .40. |

agree with Nathan. You can ususally find Glock 32's a bit cheaper than the others as the .357SIG is not as popular. Get a .40SW barrel and a 9mm barrel and you have three guns in one. Only need to buy 9mm Glock 19 mags as the .357SIG and 40SW mags work for both rounds.
XDm's are nice guns....just have never been able to figure out how to carry my XD's comfortably since they weigh a bunch more than Glocks, and not a fan of the XD or XDm trigger.
If you have no desire to have three guns in one and don't care to have the extra ammo issues, then a 3rd Generation Glock 19 will make you happy.
My trusted friend and partner for 7 years.

| You can mod glocks easier and get aftermarket parts. XDs are much more ergonomic and IMO easier to shoot. Take your pick. |

Get the one that fits YOUR hand and be done with it. That is why the M&P is so popular...you can make it fit almost any hand.
Be not afraid to test some other VERY fabulous handguns like a Browning Hi Power, CZ 75, Sig, HK,
etc.
Fit is paramount.

I agree with 1813, find one that fits your hand and stop worrying so much about price.
Remember, you want an accurate, reliable pistol that you may need to use to save your life and/or your family's.
If you have to wait and save some money for a quality sidearm -- do it.
The old saying "Buy once, cry once" is very true.

I don't recall saying price is a big deal.
I happy to spend the money on a top notch grip reduction. I'm also happy to pay for a top notch trigger job. I want the best gun long term.
800, 1000, 1200, just want a great gun...

I held an MandP today. I like it with the small backstrap(not quite as well as the XDm). If the trigger is nice it will probably be the ticket.
I don't trust myself disengaging a safety under stress yet, and DA/SA triggers are not for me. I love the Springfield EMP from an ergonomic standpoint. I really like the Sig P239, but the DA trigger sucks. I'm getting mixed feedback on Kahrs, and would like a crisper trigger, but they do fit my hand well.
I'm a fairly new shooter, if not for the safety issue I would go with a EMP for EDC, and a Sig P938 for when I just had to have a smaller gun. |

Oops, backwards.....I have a G23 that I can convert to 9mm. Never mind!
Good tip though...get the .357sig or .40 gun and convert to 9mm with new barrel and mags if you want to save some money for plinking. |

I agree with above statements.....you need to get out and try the pistols in your own hand. I am satisfied with Glocks but there are lots of other great choices.
I personally find the M&P's a better feeling pistol in the hand. And if you want to go 9mm, you also need to check a Sig 226; I nearly got one of these, but chose the cheaper G19.
CZ's are nice handguns and a great bargain.
The Browning HiPower is a true classic. I have an old BDM that is similar somewhat to a HiPower...makes me want to get a real HP. A really good pointer and very slim, like a 1911.
Check several gunshops and even pawnshops....some great deals in pawnshops. |

Don't rule out a good revolver either...S&W M19/66, M 686, or a J frame M36...Ruger SP101 etc. Not only do you have the legendary reliability, but you can change grips to make fit any hand, you can fire it double action or if you are a real trigger snob, fire it single action and have the best of both worlds.
I NEVER feel under-armed with a good revolver and a great holster/belt combination, AND.....I am not picking up brass!!
I shot in a USPSA match yesterday with a revolver (S&W M 25-2)with full moon clips in .45 ACP and had a hoot winning the revolver category. One friend of mine that is a Grand Master from Arkansas looked at it and said, " I see you are shooting a thinking man's gun today" Indeed....had to think about where I was going to reload for a lot of the stages......The brass picker just love picking up after me with the full moon clips as well.......
Anyway, don't rule it out.

I'll be the odd one here and caast my vote for the XD. I shoot the XD better and much prefer the ergonomics to the Glock. A PRP trigger and it is my choice every time. I have two XDs.
I am a minority here...
I think I'm not in the minority by saying I prefer a SA trigger over any DAO or stiker-fired gun. |

| i would also vote for the XD. I just prefer the safety features. I have owned both and they are both excellent and reliable weapons. I have not seen one in person yet, but Im very interested in the new XDs in .45 |
