I am looking to improve my current carry gun I am new to 1911s so I am asking for input from 1911 pros.
Current 1911= Kimber pro tle 2 rl
Don't like the black rubber grips. Any suggestions? The rougher texture the better Keep in mind I don't have a ton of cash
Are there any suggested upgrades to boost reliability? No issues thus far with it
holsters any owb suggestions? Currently only have a cheap galco iwb. Turnaround time is a factor and cost is a issue
Mags-- I carry a Wilson combat 8 round mag a little pricey. Any cheaper good quality mags available and where can I find a OK backup mag pouch

Does anyone have any old 1911 crap laying around that I can trade or buy cost is a issue so I would prefer quality. secondhand gear
Thanks for the advice

I carry my 1911s IWB in a crossbreed Super Tuck (Kydex is against many people's rules of 1911 carry depending on if you view a 1911 as a tool or a piece of art ) or a Texas Heritage from Tucker gun leather (image below). One of my 1911s is a Kimber Custom TLE II. I've had no issues and made no modifications. I do use Wilson Combat mags as well as mags from Chip McCormick. Many of the issues documented with Kimber 1911s can be attributed to their factory magazines, though the 2 Kimber mags I have work well at the practice range. Just as a measure of insurance and confidence, I like the Wilson magazines.

As far as grips go, it is hard to beat VZ grips for function. There are many, many choices of 1911 grips and it is much a personal choice depending on what look you prefer or if you are strictly looking for function. I have a set of carbon creations that I like the look and feel of...

I second the Chip McCormick mags. Those and the Wilson Combats have proven flawless.

However I'll see you the VZ grips and raise you a Larry Davidson G10 grip set. (http://davidsonknives.com/) He's not a "straight off the shelf to you" sort of guy, so you'll need to email him. However, while it will take a bit longer, Larry can customize the heck out of the grips. Like 'em bobbed, with an ambi cut but thinner than regular grips? He'll make them for you. I've done VZ and while their grips are nice, if you like a particular grip and it doesn't come in a "thin" version you're out of luck with VZ. Larry though will work with you to get exactly what you want.

As to OWB, I'll make a recommendation but it's only for a "working" 1911- safe queens need not apply. Mostly it's because the holster's all kydex which can "flavor" the finish on a handgun. AHolster.com (http://shop.aholster.com/) makes a great OWB kydex holster. They form them to conform to your body and are so well molded that they could give a IWB a run for total "bulge factor". They offer them in various colors and thicknesses and they even have a version with an external sight hook so that you can do one-handed slide work. They're inexpensive ($70) and the turn-around is very quick.

If you're on a budget you might be able to improve the grips you have by stippling them. All it takes is a cheap soldering iron, some time/patience and practice. You'll definately want to practice on similar material before going to town on your grips. The secret is to get the pattern/depth you like figured out on your practice material and go slooooow on your grips. Worse case scenario you end up buying a new set of grips like your planning on anyway.

It's better to have a gun on you and not need one, than to need one and not have one on you!
