Well my aunt wants a gun for protection. She really likes the 642 Smith and Wesson my mom and dad have.
Any experience with it?
Anyone carry it? She likes the CTC grips. Are the shorter grips better or not better than the bigger CTC grips?

both my wife and i have 642's as a part of our carry rotation. these guns are snappy with carry ammo. mine is loaded with 135gr +p gold dots and my wife carries 130 gr +p Hydra Shocks.
IF you decide to go this route, its well worth it to get an Apex or Wilson combat drop in spring kit installed ($25 +shipping). this takes the stock 12 lb trigger down to a much more manageable 9lb.
I prefer the stock grips and i do not advocate for laser grips, over time with out conscience training they tend to erode good shooting mechanics for those who choose not to shoot often. For some CT grips give the person a crutch to lean on by just having to put the red dot on "target".From what i have seen, follow up shots seem to be slower as well, but that is my 2c on CT grips. |

| You know HKGuy, I think you may be right what little dry firing I have done with my laser just last night. I still tend to focus on the sights but I could see someone chasing the light around and wasting time. |

| I think I might get a S&W Bodyguard in .38 and use it in an ankle holster for backup. |

Jonny B,
Hey man, I am not the kind of weenie that carries a plastic revolver. Plastic pistols are OK but revolvers? What kind of nut case do you think I am?!?!? LOL.
Could be sound advice, thanks! Why is the LCR such a good choice? |

| I must admit I have not handled many j frames and I have never shot one, but I do want one. That being said I LOVE my LCR w crimson trace grips. Bought it used when they were still pretty new for $525 and I've never looked back. I carry several different guns and calibers but I tend to revert to the lcr. Best factory trigger that I have ever shot. Try one out and see for yourself! |

Is your aunt an accomplished handgun shooter or does she need to take a basic NRA handgun safety course before she selects her own pistol/revolver?
Just curious. |

Sam,
If ever I come across a good deal on a 642, I'll take your advice. Thanks.
Will,
She needs a lot of practice, no doubt! What I plan to do is take her out about once every 2 weeks to the range and first she learns how to load and shoot my Browning Buckmark well. Then we move over to a stainless steel 38 snubbie I have, then she gets to learn the 642.
In my opinion, the smaller and lighter guns need more practice although they are easier to carry due to weight. Double edged sword there. She probably is scared enough to get a gun but also fearful enough of it to not want to practice. I hope the 3 stage plan is a good one. |
