many of you are aware that we are in the process of changing server platforms, switching over from the snitz software we are using now to the phpbb software package. with this upgrade and considering the recent server failures ive decided that its time to build a replacement server that will start from scratch together on a completely new platform. SO many of you have expressed an interest in helping with this project that i am going to publish everything that i plan to do. those who wish to contribute to this project monetarily are welcome to do so (paypal nathancollier@msn.com) and your names will be listed in a sticky thread on the new server with your contributions. please understand that i am not asking for or expecting any help what-so-ever and i will be building this server 100% out of pocket if need be. for anyone wishing to be a part of this project however, this is what i plan to put together.
 ThinkServer TS130 PRODUCT LINK - $599.99
 seagate barracuda 2TB drives X2 PRODUCT LINK - $120 x 2 = $240
microsoft web server 2008 (although likely to go with 2012 due to be released 9/4/12 if they offer a web server version). PRODUCT LINK - $412.99 (likely a little more if go with web server 2012)
if any of my fellow nerds see a reason why this would be a poor build please let me know....except for the inevitable "linux rules" criticisms. i need windows compatibility for remote management from any platform (windows, android, etc.) and already have enough challenges in this project without having to learn an entirely different and less user-friendly operating system. please look over the server specifications and see if im overlooking something.
overall i expect to tie up around $1300 in this server and any overages will be applied toward other upgrades such as chat server options. with our current bandwidth capacity we may even start hosting member images and such and we will certainly be hosting more videos.
any details on possible fund raisers would also be appreciated. i hope to have this server online by october. this is when ill have more time to dedicate to learning the database package as well as php.
thanks all, |

| Looks like a fine setup, may want to look at more DDR3 memory for it though as the specs are only showing 4 gig. |

| agreed. another $100 for memory. although 4 gigs should rock on a mysql DB, more cannot hurt. |

| Would you accept a money order? And could you post an address to mail one to or email me one? |
I'd rather be tried by twelve, than carried by six.

Looks like a fine setup Nathan. Of course, I don't know about servers. |

The XEON processor is the big brother to the i7. Generally has more cache memory, is faster and tends to have more virtualization technology built in, like hardware virtual I/O acceleration.
Also the memory controller supports error correction code (ECC) so if there is a memory error the controller knows and corrects it.
Also for multiple processors (not multiple cores) you must use XEON processors. |
