I'm on the final stretch of getting my CCP in Florida.
I'm getting it because:
It's my right
I'm guessing, that right may be threatened
I read the news, and feel the need to be prepared.
WHY DO YOU CARRY ????
Those who feel naked if their not carrying. What was your motivation ??
A generational thing ?? Grandad and Dad carried...........
Do you find yourself in potentially sticky situations ???
Ex- Boy scout "Be Prepared"
PLEASE !!! I'm not being a smart ass.
Just trying to understand your motivation, as I try to figure out my own.

I could rant all day about my optimistic ideology and how I believe our world will become better...but at the end of the day, we are all human and humans make mistakes. I choose to own a firearm as leverage against any of those "human errors of judgement" that may cross my path, whatever they maybe. In the end, if something bad is going to happen to me, I want it to be my decision (or my own fault) that got me there...not someone else who decides my fate.

On a brighter note, I am a few days away from receiving my permit! It's a pretty exciting feeling, isn't it?

This has been posted before and it is still a great explanation:

I don't carry a gun to kill people.
I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone.
I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun to scare people.
I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.
I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil.
I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.
I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry.
I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy, or a hero, or a ninja.
I carry a gun because I can't depend on someone else to be one if the need for one arises.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man.
I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate.
I carry a gun because I am small, and at 60+ years of age, unarmed and facing multiple armed thugs, I am inadequate...

I don't carry a gun because I lack faith that God will take care of me.
I carry a gun because I know we are not guaranteed safety in this life;
and
I carry a gun because I am thankful to God for providing me with this opportunity to protect myself and my loved ones;
and
I carry a gun because I remember what happened to the devout Christian Eve Carson, and many others like her, when their only means of protection was faith and the law.

I don't carry a gun because I love it.
I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police protection is a contradiction in terms.
Free citizens must protect themselves.
Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

Personally, I carry a gun because, old as I am, I'm still too young to die, and some people still depend on me.

first off, in Florida its not a CCP, its a Concealed Weapons License, so that would make it a CWL.

I look at it as being alot like my smoke alarms, fire extinguisher, or car insurance. It's something I pray I never need, but in the event that I do I'll be dang glad I've got it.

Plus people are stupid and I don't trust them.

I'd rather be tried by twelve, than carried by six.

Perhaps I can be of assistance here, please read..........

Interesting take and one you don't hear much. . . . . .

As the Supreme Court hears arguments for and against the Chicago, IL Gun Ban,
I offer you another stellar example of a letter (written by a Marine)that places the
proper perspective on what a gun means to a civilized society.

Read this eloquent and profound letter and pay close
attention to the last paragraph of the letter....

"The Gun Is Civilization" by Marko Kloos.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman
on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on
equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we'd be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger's potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat--it has no validity when most of a mugger's potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that's the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there's the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser.

People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don't constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst.

The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.

The gun is the only weapon that's as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn't work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn't both lethal and easily employable.

When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I have to ask to question.

Eddie, if you don't know why you want to carry, why did you apply for your permit? Second question: Since you went to all the trouble of going to training and filling out all the paperwork for your permit, why didn't you know the correct acronym for your state's license...?

Max, Simple answer.
I've only recently (6 months) been into guns. Started with a S&W 357 Mag. Enjoyed the shooting experience allot. Thought I'd get the wife involved as well and picked up a couple Ruger MKIII target pistols. We probably shoot twice a week and really enjoy the sport.
Although we don't live in the Ghetto, and we don't spend that much time in "Dodge City" we are not unaware of what is going on in the world around us.
To answer your question: I applied because, it's my right, I want to secure it before the liberals push to take it away, and bla... Bla.. ..bla
I don't feel threatened in my day to day life, and was posting to understand the motivation of others that carry to help figure out my options when the permit arrives.
To answer your second question: Acronym's ?????? ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME ?????? Why not Check my spelling, while your at it.

I didn't know Florida's acronym for the license either until it came in the mail and in big bold letters across the top it says CONCEALED WEAPONS OR FIREARMS LICENSE....guess it could actually be CWFL.
Just the fact that you are going through the process to get your license is a good thing. I did not pick up a center fire pistol until I was 38 years old because of "The Event" that woke me up to the fact that there are bad evil people in this world, and we come into contact with them on a daily basis. Never know when your event will come, but if you live in the same Florida that I live in, I would guess it will happen sooner rather than later. This state seems to be like the toilet of the rest of the country....someone flushes and they end up here.

You are working on getting your license....now its time to develop the mindset of being ready for the time you may need to use a gun in defense of your life or those you love. Does not sound like you are there yet, but that takes time. You are working on carrying a gun 24/7.....now, what if you need to actually use it? Once you have the mindset that its either them or you, you will carry a gun 24/7 and will feel completely naked without it. You will find yourself avoiding places that prohibit carry, and if like me, you will go into a state of panice when you receive a jury duty summons (no carry in courthouse)....not because you dread jury duty, but because you will have to leave your gun in the car or at home.
Concealed carry is a conscious lifestyle. You are either 100% in, or you are wasting your money and your time. Its a big responsibility to carry a gun every day and possess the ability to terminate any confrontation with a simple squeeze of the trigger.
Good luck my friend....I see a tropical wave headed in our direction and appears to be on track right at us. Its that time of year.

There was a guy about 5 years ago that walked in to a local mall with multiple guns, and just started murdering people. It was a bloodbath. What finally took the guy out, was an off duty cop that was carrying concealed, heard the shots while eating, and went to investigate. I was at that very mall, in the very area the shootings took place, just one or two days prior to the shooting with my son. It seems like there was another shooting that made national news at a college around the same time, and I was just like screw it. I'm getting a permit.

I must admit there have been times over the years since getting my permit that I've gotten lazy and not carried, or lulled myself in to a false sense of security by carrying a .380 LCP pocket noise maker. I'm being better now, and it sure helps that I have the new XDs, which allows me to easily carry a .45

Trolley Square, I had left the area twenty minutes before the went down after buying glass gecko at the glass shop on the 7th east side of the mall.

Zonker, I think you see where I'm comming from. I am also very well aware of the legitimate concerns of the reallity of day to day potential threats out there, such as others have posted on this thread.
I agree, and also have the same concerns. THAT !! Is why I joined this forum in the first place.
I'm guessing that others (new to guns) have had the same concerns, and also seek the, wisdom, opinions, and experience that this Forum has to offer.
Every Journey starts with a single step.

Yes. You nailed it. Wow, you dodged a bullet there quite literally. So, were you carrying at the time?

See, guys like flowers too...
