Any Remington 700 long range folks in here?

Postby Mogunner » Mon Dec 29, 2014 1:13 pm

I am building a Remington 700 308 now with a 24" barrel (soon to be 20" and threaded), Bell and Carlson Medalist stock, Harris Bipod, Millett 6-25x56 LRS Scope, and soon a Timney 517 trigger.

Do any of you have any 700 builds they would like to share?

Yes!

...except its a weatherby vanguard. See modular scope mount thread. I do love hearing about the 700 builds though and the topic in general! Mine is more of an off the shelf affair.

I was specifically seeking a 24" barrel for the 243WIN to give the powder more time to burn, etc. and didn't mind the extra weight for this rifle. No such concerns for eking out as much velocity from barrel length for your application? Maybe what is essentially the same case, the .308 doesn't have as much powder capacity because of the bigger bullet? I suppose a shorter barrel (all other things being equal) would vibrate less during the shot. What other factors are leading to chop down the barrel?

I've heard many good things about the Timney! No need to send it back to Remington for the trigger group recall, then! 8) I'm hoping that the Vanguard S2's 2-stage trigger works as good in the field as I imagine from the couple of dry fire samples I've taken so far. It supposedly is adjustable down to 2.5 lbs.
Best regards,

Tye

Bed the action and you should have good performer. I've done several 700s like your planning and have always had acceptable results. You'll probably have to start reloading to see what the rifle is really capable of.

if your building a target gun, pillar and glass bedding are a must and depending on how far you plan on shooting, you may want to put a 20 moa base on the rifle.

Stick with the 24" barrel the extra 150 FPS will help keep the bullet stabilized longer.

I installed the bell and Carlson stock that has aluminum bedding rather than doing it myself. I might leave the barrel long depending on how short of a suppressor I can find
