FIRE

Postby ridurall » Mon Feb 09, 2015 10:56 pm

Man we had one hell of a fire on our 400 acres. Somebody supposedly herding cattle with ATVs started it on the river on Saturday and the fire department thought they had it out. Well it burned thousands of acres and about 80% of our place. Scotty helped me with my 100 gallon sprayer and my son in law Sam brought my dozer up to help the counties 4 graders build firelines. At least we didn't lose our cabin, deer stands, feeders or barn. We did lose a nice 8X8 steel shed that had a 1 lb cylinder of propane the blew the windows out as it burned. It could have been worse. Check the CCF Facebook site for more pictures.

Spring is around the corner. You'll be surprised at how quickly things recover.

Yep we are hoping that in the midst of this terrible drought that we will get enough rain to grow some grass and prevent the place turning into a bunch of sand dunes. 75 miles from here we have a place called Little Sahara that is a blast to ride ATVs at with 60, 70 foot & perhaps larger dunes. I think I remember that it's a bit larger than 1600 acres. I would rather have the game that comes with new growth though. Several years ago I spent over $10,000 fencing the 400 acres. Now I'm getting kind of old for that kind of fence work. After dragging my sprayer hose over a bunch of that land I'm as sore as an old goat. Yet I still consider ourselves lucky in what we didn't lose. Just out of freak timing I had moved several items out of that shed into the cabin so we didn't lose them.

That's very unfortunate. At least no one was hurt.

I just got off the phone with the Lawton City Attorney who owns the land where the fire started when their Kawasaki Mule got in some tall grass and it cooked off. I called him at work and he seemed to be a pretty decent person although I was worried about him being a lawyer. I did know his father who passed away the same year as mine and we spent some time reminiscing about my dealings with his father when we built the fence between us. Anyway in the long run the building that got burned up was $1210 and he is sending me a check to pay for it. I thought that was pretty decent of him and he is being a good neighbor. We also spoke about the hunting on our properties and if we have a wounded animal cross the fence between us then we agree that it can be pursued across the fence.

It was warm however it was 20 degrees this morning and we have 3" of snow outside. Some much needed moisture.
