In my late teens I shot a .44 magnum without hearing protection. It wasn't pleasant, but I wasn't deafened. If anything, this guy just makes a good case for suppressors.

Did you shoot it indoors? That can make a big difference.
Burr is not a gun expert, and does not claim to be one, but his point about firing a gun indoors without hearing protection is valid. It doesn't mean you should not use a service caliber, but it does mean you should be prepared to experience temporary hearing loss once the shooting starts.

The .44 was outdoors, but I have shot 9mm indoors without hearing protection. Again, not pleasant, but manageable. A suppressor would be best, but I'd rather use a 9, 45 or intermediate rifle round than a .22 if I had that option.

Hopefully getting a suppressor will be a much more convenient option soon
