I want to shoot field mice out to about 100 yards. I was going to go the .17 Win Mag route, but the HMR seems to have a much larger following. I found literal dozens of .17 HMR rifles yesterday as I bounced around all the different LGSs, but not one had a .17 Win Mag in stock. I wanted the .17 Win Mag for the additional velocity, but now I'm beginning to question which is the best choice. What is it about the HMR that makes it so much more popular? Is either of these a good choice for this intended use? How true does the tiny .17 bullet remain at 100+ yards? Is there a package (gun that comes with a caliber specific optic) worth considering?
Thanks,
.17 Win Mag or .17 HMR?

Re: .17 Win Mag or .17 HMR?
When I had my .17hmr, i could cover a 5 shot group with a quarter at 100yards. I dont claim to be a good long gun shooter either. They are wicked funn guns and a devastating round for squirrels.
